The content of the Theories, Methods and Techniques unit provides a sequential (and to some extent chronological) description of major teaching methodologies and provides comments on the relative advantages and disadvantages of each methodology. While giving a comprehensive list of possible teaching methods, the unit gives evidence that no one method should be used exclusively but that elements from various methods can be combined for maximum effectiveness. Having said this, the unit favours the ESA (engage, study, activate) method which was developed out of a study of all traditional methods, as being the optimum methodology to be used.
