English has many parts of speech that can be daunting for both students and teachers. There are nouns which are essentially objects. Nouns are divided into many sub-categories including common, proper, compound, abstract and collective. Nouns can be classified as either countable or non-countable. Meaning you can either literally count the noun or you can't. There are adjectives, these are describing words used to describe nouns such as people and places. There are articles which are either definite or indefinite. The difference between the two are whether you are talking about a specific thing or person, or speaking generally. Verbs are doing words. They describe the action that is, has or will take place. They are put into different categories either transitive or intransitive. Other parts of speech include adverbs, gerunds, pronouns and prepositions/conjunctions. Each part of speech has specific function and rules and are very common and important in the English language.
