This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This course has taught me how to go beyond labeling the subject, verb, and object in order to truly explain various grammar skills to a student learning english. It has taught me to go slower than I originally anticipated and to listen to student needs more overtly. The course has reiterated the tools of patience and a positive attitude along with planning and organization.
Perhaps the single most effective tool I have gained from this course is the lesson planning. Being more overt and writing the specific steps is an excellent way to pass along the plans if I must be out of the classroom for any reason. Also, being able to plan several lessons in advance allows me to be prepared for last minute changes to the schedule without the students being bored and frustrated while I attempt to come up with a filler exercise.
Beyond those huge milestones listed above, there are plenty of small things that I learned as well, of course. Various verb forms, plenty of tenses, the passive and active voice, classroom management techniques, working with various learners, and creating a dynamic classroom environment to name a few.
