This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
I have learned a great deal about the english language during the study of this course. Even though I am a native english speaker, I realized that I knew very little of the actual grammar and various tenses that I use regularly in written and spoken words. Grammar was not emphasized during my education growing up, apart from basic parts of speech and sentence subjects/objects, etc. For example, I was surprised to learn that the english language has 12 tenses!
I also feel that the course prepared me very well in how to plan lessons, deal with classroom diversity, and maximize students' experience. I have a natural ability to interact well with others, and to communicate ideas so that they are clearly understood. But this course helped me to generate ideas on how keep students' engaged, make things interesting and relevant, and maintain structure within the classroom. I learned a lot about different teaching styles, and I believe I will combine a lot of these styles to form my own style. Of course, now I need practical, real-life experience, which will be the true test. But I feel well-prepared and as confident as can be expected of someone without serious experience. I am thankful that I will not be immediately jumping into my own classroom setting. I plan to shadow some ESL teachers of different levels in my community, all of whom teach (nearly) monolingual classes of spanish speakers. I am applying to a job in South Korea, and I know that the education I've received here will benefit me tremendously.
