This unit covers teaching pronunciation and phonology. It addresses the challenges of insecurity and hesitancy around the topic, for both teachers and students; and the difficulties for learners to grasp sounds, intonations, and stresses that may be different from their native language; and offers practical teaching techniques to help both teachers and students overcome these challenges. I have primarily been teaching pronunciation and intonation as required; I usually do this as a group exercise or with individuals. I really like the activity for peer dictation mentioned in this unit. I think it would be a fun and useful way for my students to engage with pronunciation. Additionally, I think it would be beneficial to add more focused time on pronunciation, stress, and intonation, especially for the areas I know where the students struggle as their own language doesn't have comparable sounds or sounds that seem similar, but can be confusing with certain English words. I found this unit very helpful and will likely refer to it often for ways to vary my teaching on this topic.
