Songs, chants, music, games, stories, arts and crafts, and seasonal activities can all be used in the classroom to teach language points. Songs, chants, and music can be used for practice with listening, creative writing, reading, pronunciation, stress, memorization, intonation, and rhythm, and are great for adding a fun atmosphere. For younger learners, rhymes, use of actions, and strong rhythms are key. For older students, singing might feel embarrassing, so they might like to bring copies of their favorite pop lyrics to class instead or make it more karaoke-style. Either way, music can be great for the Engage phase, and can be used in drilling, repetition, and gap fill activities. Games can also be adapted for use in the classroom, as long as they have a purpose, rules, and an element of fun. Stories are great for building vocabulary, can be used to develop all four skills, and can be used for any level or age group. Arts and crafts are not only fun, but get the other side of students' brains working. Seasonal activities can as well, and, since holidays are typically thought of as fun, provide a way to get students excited to learn. Drama and movement provide a way for students to practice language in more realistic contexts.
