I spent a protracted period of time studying this unit and had to re-read a lot because the information was mostly new to me. I basically learned the overall bones of a course, the big decisions that need to be made before fleshing it out with fancy materials and teaching skills. Firstly, there is the need to know what the students need. Then the teacher needs to reference that against any limitations imposed by culture, student characteristics, time constraints, compulory topics and rescources. Then the teacher can create a realistic syllabus.
I learned an incredible amount about tests - I did not know there were six kinds! And now I know them all and when to apply them. I can see now how inadequate testing was a problem in some of my previous teaching roles and can see a way forward now.
No syllabus is complete without a fair trial and feedback, though and that is where end-of-course questionnaires come in, which is a topic I have thought about before but never implemented. I am moreencouraged to do so in future.
