In Unit 2, we are given an overview of mainly 3 learning and behavior theories relevant to the course. These are divided into the constructivist, maturationist and environmentalist camps. We examine the differences between language acquisition and language learning, thereby also distinguishing between the nature of L1 (first or mother tongue) and L2 (the language learned in a classroom). Research findings based on both are discussed, as well as what we may learn and apply as a result. Building upon that, Jeremy Harmer's ESA (Engage, Study and Activate) theory, and its three main structuring designs (Straight-Arrow, Boomerang and Patchwork) is introduced and explained. Considerations of seating arrangements, teacher roles and character traits tendencies in students are then discussed with respect to two main age bands (5-9 and 9-13 year olds) to improve the efficiency of an approach.
