From unit 2 of the course, I have learnt that there are different theories related to language acquisition, mainly biological, environmental or a combination of both. L1 is for native language; L2 may be acquired or learnt. For young learners in Group 1, activities must be suitable to maintain the interest of young children. Examples of activities include songs and games and learning through repetition. For older learners in Group 2, activities need to be improvised as the students are more matured and require different activities to keep them engaged. Activities include listening to current songs, learning through memorization and teacher talk time is high. ESA is a methodology that can be used in teaching English. Engage is to allow students to think and talk in English. Followed by Study stage where knowledge is imparted from teacher to student. Lastly, the activate stage allows students to demonstrate acquired knowledge. The ESA method can be adapted into other alternatives such as Boomerang and Patchwork. A good learning environment requires teachers to consider seating arrangements that are most suitable to the type of activity conducted. It is also important to acknowledge the multifaceted role teachers play in the classroom from policeman to instructor, counselor, etc. Different levels of English are tabled ranging from C2 to A1 along with general descriptions of ability at each level.
