The words "if" and "when" are commonly thrown around throughout writings and speaking in the English language. For a majority of their usage, they are paired with some kind of hypothetical situation and the consequences that may occur due to the situation at hand. They also refer to certain matters that are factual, specifically when spoken or written within the present tense. Reported speech and directed speech are two more topics that just come naturally in terms of speaking and writing as well. Due to these topics coming naturally to native English speakers, they may require a bit more attention when trying to teach non-English speakers as these are topics that really are never taught to us within our schooling.
