Reading and listening are only two of the four basic skills in learning a language, actually in learning in general. If a discussion is brought up during class about a specific topic, a student may automatically register the topic because they had read it somewhere before or overheard a family member talking about the topic. An important matter when it comes to these two basic skills, is finding a topic that is interesting enough for all, or a majority, of the students to be able to participate. As long as the topic is interesting enough for the students, they will be more than eager to engage themselves in the classroom discussions and activities. Once a particular topic is found that is deemed engaging for the students, it then needs to be determined if the vocabulary is suitable for the age and level of the students. If the vocabulary is too advanced, the students will not gain anything from the lesson.
