Learning tenses is going to be difficult and having a thorough understanding of it myself is the only way to convincingly teach others of the correct usage.
I think the best way to memorise will be to create shortcuts to memorise the difference between them. Whilst one cannot easily use this technique in instruction, it will help me to remember the different names clearly.
