Most teaching positions are for young learners, but you can also find adult and business English teaching quite easily. There are literally thousands of language schools in the larger cities of Spain. Unfortunately, Spain is one of the more difficult countries for non-EU passport holders to find jobs, as regulations are quite strict.

Securing a position teaching English in Spain is much harder for American citizens than it is for EU nationals, but it is still totally possible if have patience, energy and some financial back up to see you through the job search.

Finding a position teaching English in Spain it is easier to find while in the country. Schools like to see prospective teachers in the flesh so they can gain an impression of how the teacher will be received by their students. Choose your preferred teaching location beforehand and go there. Bigger cities have more openings for English teachers but they also have more teachers seeking employment. Salaries are paid monthly and you will need 2 months rent and bond before moving in to accommodation. Check notice boards and local press for advertised room share options.

The school year begins in October, so it is advised you get here in August or September. Many schools recruit last minute, so remain active throughout this period.

Sample Job offer for Teaching English in Spain

"Our International School is looking for qualified English teachers for one year. The Teacher will be responsible for teaching general English Language, writing reports, conducting exams and maintaining discipline in the school. Students age from 6 to 19 years. The class size is 18 to 20 students for the secondary and 20 to 25 pupils for the primary. Monthly salary is 1400 Euro, paid on the last day of each month. We also offer Visa and work permit assistance. Schedule: 8.30AM - 2 PM, Monday to Friday. Round trip air ticket, single housing with furnishings like TV, VCR, washing machine, and internet. Medical insurance 50/50. Qualification: Dedicated, enthusiastic, professional, must be willing to relocate. B.E. or B.A./Diploma, High school certificate (ESL or TESOL Certification, Teaching experience preferred but not compulsory)."
