Unit 15 presents several different ways of evaluating student’s level and progress:
Tutorials: done individually or in small groups they provide an opportunity to better assess a
student’s level, how well they performed a task, which subjects are more challenging, etc.
Evaluation by the students: usually done by means of a questionnaire or guided discussion, this process promotes
genuine interaction and helps students become more aware and invested in what is happening
in the classroom.
Tests: used typically to assess the level and progress of the students in a more quantifiable manner.
There are many types of tests, depending on what they are intended to evaluate and at what
stage in the course they are given.
Unit 15 also explains in detail 4 types of tests:
Placement tests: designed to place new students into the correct class according to their language ability. They usually
include a spoken interview and a written part. Questions gradually increase in difficulty to allow the
teacher to better gauge the language level of the student.
Progress tests: used periodically to assess the progress of the students and identified which areas need more work.
These tests should include a balance of all four skills - reading, writing, speaking and listening.
Diagnostic tests: similar in content to placement tests they are given at the start of the course to help the teacher
identify areas of difficulty and prepare lessons and materials accordingly.
Practice tests: used to prepare students for an external exam they usually follow the format of that external examination.
In addition, Unit 15 provides details of a small list of the most common external exams: TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC, Cambridge Assessment and Trinity College London.
