In this unit I have learnt about the various types of roles that a teacher can hold within a class. This is important as it shows how a holistic and well rounded teaching style can really make a difference in the way the learners view the class. It can also make a big difference in the learners’ motivation levels and how well the teacher is able to monitor the progress of the class.
I have also learnt about the various characteristics of the learners and how that can affect why or how they are taking up English as a second language. This includes their motivation (e.g. studying to travel), learning experience and also their attention span. This can differ strongly depending on the learners’ cultural background and age.
There was also a descriptive section on the various levels that learners may have for the English language - varying from beginner to advanced. Using this along with the Common European Framework, a teacher will be able to clearly identify the needs of the learner and provide a better learning experience for them.
