In Unit 11 - The receptive skills of reading and listening for language learners are used for the purpose of instruction and entertainment. Reading and listening can be used for prediction, scanning, general idea (skimming), detailed information and deduction from context. There are authentic text not for language learners and non authentic text which is written specifically for language learners. It is important for the teacher to use a variety of topics that will keep the students interested. Give students the opportunity to share what they know about a topic or have obtained from their life experiences, pre-teach vocabulary for the essential meaning of the text and then ask questions to monitor understanding. Keep the challenges of the learning realistic and engaging.
