This unit shows the importance of language skills. there are four basic skills of language- Reading , listening, speaking, and writing. Reading and listening skills are receptive skills where as productive skills are speaking and writing. Reading and listening is many times with a purpose,and many a times for entertainment or sometimes for both. Reading and listening is not just a matter if eyes and ears there is a lot to it. Major role is played by mind in understanding the information and making a conclusion. There are number of specialist skills involved in reading and listening such as predictive skills, skimming the information, scanning the specific information, detailed information etc. Problems in reading are like sentence length, unfamiliar words, word length etc. listening has other set of problems like trying to deduce the meaning of the language spoken, understanding the words as it is spoken only once. There are some methods to help students to improve both of thses skills while learning the language - Pre-teaching vocabulary before the actual lesson so that kids are aware of the difficult words in the text careful selection of text according to the class interest and there understanding level. slecting a topic is very important part creating interest in the students for the language also helps in learning these skills. Motivating the students for language learning and keeping the interest on during the class is the main reason for the success of a teachers teaching ability and also for the student learning process.
