Productive skills are important for communicating effectively. Unlike the receptive skills (reading & listening)that relate to taking information in, the productive skills, speaking and writing, are those we use to put information out. All four skills are necessary for good communication. While speaking, a productive skills, is often encouraged in the classroom and what many students really want to focus on, people often forget how important it is not to overlook writing skills. Because writing (and reading, of course) improves spelling, writing can help with the pronunciation of words as it helps to reinforce the order of letters and how they sound when put in a particular sequence. Though teachers often use writing exercises for homework,it's not impossible to have creative and useful writing activities that allow students to engage with each other. For example, the comic writing exercise. Writing is also important to practice because it is a tool for accuracy. Whereas many of the games mentioned in this unit will help with fluency, making time for controlled activities that reinforce using the language accurately and correctly will help students as they continue exploring their new language and will act as a building block to increased fluency.
