This unit covered how to evaluate the appropriacy of and and plan lessons around new vocabulary and structure within an TESL context. It is very important to choose both at the right level for your students, as well as keep in mind how often a student is likely to come across or use the target language.
For vocabulary, the similarity of the language to the student's own, the similarity to already known words in English, the spelling and the pronunciation all need to considered. It is then important to teach the form of the vocabulary (spelling and pronunciation), it's place in the language (verb, noun, etc) and it's context (why this word or why NOT this word in certain situations). For forms and grammatical structures, it is additionally important to talk about the variations between written and spoken forms.
The actual teaching of the lesson follows previous suggestions for methods of teaching, and should be based along the same guidelines (class size, space, inter-group dynamics, etc) to maximize student talking time with the new language. The ESA and variations are good to consider here.
