This lesson emphasized techniques in teaching a new language. In the area of vocabulary, it gave methods and approaches to teaching a new language. The teaching methods referred to primarily were those of the ESA teaching techniques; namely, the Straight Arrow, Boomerang and the Patchwork.
The reasons for learning new vocabulary and criteria for selecting new vocabulary were also discussed. The functions of language and the structure of the language were also highlighted and the aspects of making language learning easier for the student. This lesson requires a lot of attention to the various techniques suggested in that there are aspects that are similar to each technique but the patterns are different. Learning the new vocabulary of the language also requires one to consider the students' learning level and the language structure being taught.
