This unit provided an expansive overview of the concept of both the teacher and the learner in the classroom (as specifically regarding to TEFL and TESOL instruction). More specifically, not only was the concept of both explored, but the qualities of what makes a good example of each in the classroom was described. In addition, the various different roles that teachers occupy in the classroom were discussed in detail, as well as when and why these roles should be utilized. In regards to the category of leaners, different types of learners were explained (for example, adult learners versus young learners), as well as the many factors that affect all learners and how they learn (for example, learning experience and motivation). The commonly recognized levels of language ability were described, and a brief list of motivating factors for learners was provided. In conclusion, aside from just learning about the terminology and different categories that pertain to teachers and learners, I feel that I learned from this unit more about the bidirectional relationship between teachers and learners; for example, a teacher's usage of different roles in the classroom may affect students' motivation and behaviour, and a student's specific cultural orientation and life history will most likely affect how they respond to a specific teacher's teaching style or approach. In learning about each party in more detail, the important relationship between the two and how this relationship functions and changes was made more clear, and thus allowed me to envision how this relationship would manifest in the actual classroom/during real lessons.
