English language learners vary greatly. They can be children, teenagers, or adults. Additionally, each group is learning English for different reasons. Assessing why each group is trying to learn English and factoring that into future lessons will be essential to the interest level of the class. Learning precisely what they need to be successful is essential. The different groups also create differences in motivation, attendance, and attention. Younger learners lose attention fast and might not be as motivated, as it might not have been their choice to learn English. However, adult learners will be further motivated to learn and have longer attention spans. Adult learners could possible have attendance issues though, as they are busy working and raising families. All of these are important factors to consider when teaching.
