Listening and Reading are the receptive skills of a language. Eyes and ears are not the only tools used to acquire them. Reading a test involves other abilities that allow our brain to get through the meaning of the text or listening.
Different are the reason to read a text:
for purpose
for entertainment
The other abilities we need to develop our receptive skills are called subskills and include:
Predictive skills: predicting to content of a reading by the headline
Skimming: reading fot the gist of a text/dialogue
Scanning: reading or listening to for a special information
