This unit reviewed the parts of speech in English. It covered nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, prepositions, participles, and gerunds. I never realized how important it was to understand the parts of speech until I studied Spanish. In order to understand how to form sentences in another language, one must understand the parts of speech in their native language. Particularly helpful is understanding the basic verb tenses. I have learned that some languages, like Polish, do not have a present perfect form so understanding how the tenses function is critical for explaining forms to learners. The chart listing the four basic forms (base, past simple, past participle, present participle) of irregular verbs is very important and must simply be memorized. This lesson was very helpful for me. I think it will be a good resource to reference as I prepare lessons for my conversation class.
