Unit 15 is about evaluation and testing. Feedback to students can be informal or formal. During the course of a typical lesson, there will be many instances of informal feedback to students. There are many different forms of formal evaluation that can also be used, each with its own specific purpose. Teachers need to be clear on the purpose for each form of evaluation used and be confident that it is appropriate for the task at hand. Key types of testing include placement testing, diagnostic testing, progress testing, practice testing and external examinations. The various types of evaluation can all be used to provide feedback to students. Learning for me from this unit has been the affirmation of the value of using a range of different forms of evaluation, to ensure that students are effectively informed as to their level of achievement and progress and what they need to do to improve.
