In this unit i've learnt that authentic materials are things like newspapers, magazines, menus and brochures, and that they can be more interesting and motivating for the students and can help them gain confidence when they understand them. Created materials can be things like crosswords, flashcards, role-play cards and picture stories, and these can be beneficial because they are specifically designed for the students and can be graded, you should use a mix of the two. i've learnt that course books have their advantages and their disadvantages, some of the advantages are that they provide a syllabus that is graded to a level that is suitable for the students, they offer continual progress which the student can look back on and review and they are tried and tested. Some disadvantages of course books are that they don't always fit the needs of the class, they can become predictable and boring and that they are almost always a compromise. to get the best out of a course book you can omit certain parts if you feel they are not beneficial, you can supplement extra material to aid students understanding, replace certain material with other similar material or adapt the material in your own style.
