The unit is dedicated to teaching phonology and pronunciation. The main areas covered are intonation, stress and rythm, and phonetic alphabet. Intonation with which we say sentences largely depends on the message we want to convey. We typically use rise/fall pattern for affirmative sentences and some questions. If we use fall/rise intonation it most likely indicates friendly attitude and welcoming the other party to speak.
Stress in and sentence depends on which word we want to emphasize. For example the sentences 'We like DOGS.' and 'We LIKE DOGS.' have two different meanings.
Words in English often have similar pronunciation but are spelled different and vice versa. This makes teaching more challenging. Phonetic alphabet is a great aid when teaching spelling and pronunciation.
