Unit 3 tackles the different methodologies in EFL teaching that are available to teachers. The unit starts by listing nine of the most common methods and techniques, and outlines the basic principles, advantages and disadvantages for each of them. Since so many different methods are available, it can be difficult for teachers to decide which method is most suitable for their classroom. However, ensuring that students remain motivated, that they have enough exposure to the language and that they have ample opportunity to use it during classes, are some of the most important goals for teachers. Fortunately, the ‘ESA’ method, created by Jeremy Harmer, allows teachers to meet all the necessary conditions. An ESA lesson should always be able to engage students during the Engage phase of a lesson and ensure that students study the construction of the language during the Study phase. Lastly, during the Activate phase, students should be using the language actively and communicate with each other. The unit then further lists more detailed descriptions of how teachers can use the ‘ESA’ method effectively. The last section of this unit tackles an important issue, namely how and when to give feedback to students. Since I have no experience teaching, the majority of this unit contained information that I was not aware of. I found the description of the ‘ESA’ method to be highly interesting and I feel that I am starting to understand how teachers can rely on these methods and techniques to keep students motivated and engaged during classes.
