This unit focused on the learner and teacher. Understanding the qualities of a “good” teacher and their various roles in the classroom, as well as the teacher understanding the learner. It goes into some of the characteristics and nuances of different types of learners from children to adults. Beyond this, there can be cultural differences, differences in learning styles and a range of motivations as to why a student may be learning the language. Having this overall awareness greatly assists in being an effective and successful instructor.
When thinking about this unit, I believe the categorization of the teacher roles stood out most for me. As I have already taught business English for almost eight years, this part of the unit was a healthy reminder to be even more aware of these roles, knowing when to use them, and perhaps more importantly, when ‘not’ to use them.
