Classroom management is a vital part of teaching for every teacher to consider. The classroom may be managed differently depending on the ages and abilities of the students, class sizes and the types of activities prepared. Rows of students are easier to monitor and suitable for large classes but horseshoe arrangements are more intimate and make the teacher less dominating. Eye contact, gestures, body language and manner are all important for the teacher to consider. There are advantages and disadvantages to grouping students in different ways and mixing things up. When writing on the board, the back will be to the students but there are ways to ensure that this is not for too long and keeps the class engaged. Learning names, using them at the end of a sentence, giving clear instructions using simple language, checking the instructions have been understood are a handful of things to do consistently and well to help the class run smoothly and effectively. Rapport with the students should be built and discipline maintained. A good teacher should be fair, consistent, have good rapport with the students, act with authority when necessary, keep calm and not lose their temper. With time, a personal teaching style will develop and classroom management will become natural as both the students and teacher become accustomed to one another.
