Unit 11 covers teaching receptive skills. The four basic skills in language include receptive skills (reading and listening) and productive skills (speaking and writing). These are explained. The reasons for reading and listening include; for a purpose, and for entertainment. How we read is also covered, including; predictive skills, specific information- scanning, general idea- skimming, detailed information and deduction from context. The problems with listening and reading are also explained. Language is then discussed, including the concepts of pre-teaching challenging vocabulary, and carefully selecting the texts. The topics, creating interest and tasks are also covered. An outline of a typical receptive skills lesson (in the patchwork form) is given. An example of making comparisons about what people wear is also included, with some exercises in answering questions, and filling in the blanks. A grammar example is also explained, accompanied by some exercises in filling in the blanks and some other exercises.
