There are a number of factors to consider when configuring, organizing, and managing a classroom. Ultimately, one must attempt to build a most conducive learning atmosphere given certain constraints out of one's control, such as a schools disciplinary code, class size, or the overall personality makeup of the class. Learning a language is intimidating, so developing a rapport with and among students is critical, along with promoting a relaxing, engaging atmosphere. This needs to be balanced with overall classroom control though, so students stay focused, engaged, and on-task; and understand the purpose of the lesson. The teacher should also attempt to maximize student talk time by creating various pair and group activities, and constantly changing up such activities so as to keep the lesson fresh. Teachers should as such minimize their own talk time and not waste the time of the students by using language beyond their comprehension level, jargon, or always relying on verbal communication over visual alternatives.
