Unit 14 discusses the controversy around course books designed for teaching and the love/hate relationship of teachers to their respective books. It also delves into the reality that some schools and systems are more equipped than others to address the needs of their students. Supplemental learning materials are often necessary to make learning effective and the two types of materials (authentic versus created) are discussed here.
This unit helped clarify the advantages versus disadvantages of course book work and in doing so, gave me a better idea of how to make learning guided, but flexible. It also combined information provided from other units. One thing I found to be critical when it came to providing supplemental materials was the idea of relevancy (touched on in previous units) and introducing concepts that allowed the students to incorporate things that interest them into the lesson plan so as to enhance their attention and participation.
