Unit 19 focuses on teaching specific types of student groups, covering beginner classes, classes with only one individual, ESP classes, as well as monolingual and multilingual classes. It’s delves into the unique challenges each category may present and provides suggestions for addressing those challenges.
I’ve had a variety of different careers and one of the things I find interesting about starting a in a few field, is that often those training me will say that they would rather train someone who knows nothing, than train someone who has experience and thinks they know everything. I understand that sentiment can be narrow-minded, but there is truth to it, to an extent. It’s scary to hold the beginning (and therefore, the backbone) of someone’s education in your hands, but having the opportunity to teach beginners also provides the teacher the ability to give students a solid foundation without having to address too many bad habits previous experience may have instilled in the student. This unit helped remind me of that reality and to not fear teaching those new to the English language.
