In English past, present and future tenses each have four parts; simple, continuous, perfect and perfect continuous, producing 12 fundamental tense combinations in all, which can be rather intimidating for the English language student, especially for students whose native languages only have 1-3 tenses. This unit is focussed on the four aspects of the present tense, concentrating on the rules of construction for the affirmative, negative and interrogative and the common usage for each part. The examples of common mistakes made by students are particularly helpful in that they help explain what aspects of the construction are particularly problematic to students and why. This makes it easier for the teacher to anticipate and hopefully preempt or at least prepare for any particular struggles in this regard.
