Auburn, Kentucky TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
I noticed that the teacher was being sort of impatient and harsh in the first lesson right from the start. I was a bit confused until watching the second lesson which is when I realized that he was demonstrating different ways to lead the class. The students were more responsive and willing to participate in the second video because the teacher made connections with them right from the start. He gave the class a proper greeting and asked everyone their name. He was also accepting when someone showed up late. In lesson two he also gave clearer instructions and asked questions to ensure everyone understood the point that he was trying to make. He was more patient and gave a better introduction/prompt to the information that was going to be covered. In lesson one, he didn't really explain what type of answers that he was trying to solicit, and he got angry and short with the students when they didn't understand what was going on. This made the class less willing to participate and seemed to lower class morale.
I learned that it is important to have clear expectations with your students and to give proper instructions/prompts before expecting the students to know what you are covering. It is also important to be positively engaging with the class, and to not get frustrated when a student gives the wrong answer. Questions can always be asked to try and prompt the correct response, rather than just saying "wrong."
