In this unit, I learned about the several different methodologies used for teaching English as a second language. I learned that some methods have been proven to be more effective than others. Furthermore, there are certain times when one method will be more appropriate than another depending on the goal of the lesson. This unit explained that the ESA - 'Engage, Study, Activate' - method is effective for motivating the students, allowing them to learn the language and use it as well. I also learned that there are different ways to use the ESA method. For example, the 'patchwork method' can be used during extended sessions and can include any combination of the ESA elements as long as the lesson begins with and 'Engage' activity and ends with an 'Activate' activity.
