This unit focused on teaching pronunciation and phonology. While this area may be difficult for some to teach, it is nevertheless important and helpful for the English language learner. The unit went into great depth regarding intonation. Native speakers of English use intonation intuitively. Many factual sentences have a natural rise and fall to them. When we are asking a question or expecting a response, however, we use a fall then rise intonation. This can and should be taught to help students better communicate. Stress of a syllable or word is also helpful for students to learn. The phonemic alphabet was discussed, as this is the way a student can look in a dictionary and understand how to pronounce a word. English teachers would do well to help their students become familiar with it.
