ESA methods are easily applied to introducing new language. Whatever the level of the student or class, students need to be able to be exposed to new language, understand its meaning, and how to practice or produce it. Vocabulary lessons usually use the 'straight arrow' approach. Grammer lessons or function-based lessons will more often use a 'boomerang' or 'patchwork' approach. When teaching vocabulary the teacher will need to select vocab that is appropriate to the student/task and how likely it is the student will encounter that vocabulary. When teaching grammer, the teacher needs to convey the meaning of the language, how it is used and any differences in spoken and written forms. There are a variety of techniques for teaching vocabulary, grammer and language functions including pictures, gap-fills, role-playing in pair-work, storybuilding and producing material like brochures, maps, and advertisements.
