This unit is about Conditionals and Reported Speech. Conditionals are sentences containing 'if' or 'when' which refers to past, present or future possibilities. There are five main conditionals. Zero conditional refers to actions and facts that are irrefutable. First conditional talks about a real situation in the future that is possible, probable or even certain, once the condition has been satisfied. Second conditional communicates a present or future unreal, hypothetical situation that is presently not true or unlikely to be true. Third conditional refers to a hypothetical past action (or non-action) and the hypothetical past consequence/result. Mixed conditional refers to a hypothetical past action or state, and the hypothetical present consequence. When we turn direct speech to reported speech, the verb tenses, the pronouns and time expressions change. The present verb tenses become past tenses, the pronouns denoting who is spoken to can change depending on the context and time expressions are also modified.
