The goal for a teacher should be to have a class go as smoothly as possible and be about the student as much as possible. This is why a guideline for a class is recommended. It allows teachers to create goals that they want to accomplish and makes sure they have all the papers and equipment they need for the class. It also creates a structure that one may not be able to do on the spot. However, a guideline is just that a guideline. Do not script your class. It should be a brief bullet point list of what you want to accomplish, what you want the students to accomplish, the time necessary for each task and how you plan to do so. You should also anticipate problems that may occur and how you plan to react to them. This is where flexibility comes in. If you keep your guideline brief it makes it a lot easier to adjust things if needed. It is about the students and ultimately you never know until you're there what exactly is going to work with your students and what they need. So it is good to be prepared, always have a goal in mind and try not to stray from the goal, but be prepared to mix up the way you achieve that goal.
