Unit 14 is all about the use of coursebooks and materials for an English class. Materials can be divided up into two distinct categories; authentic materials and created. Authentic materials are any genuine sources for the use of listening, writing or speaking in English. These materials can be programs, magazines, newspapers, songs, poems, brochures, menus, films or video. Hence these materials are not on specifically graded on level and have a rich variety of vocabulary or topics to keep the lesson interesting. Created materials are supplemented by the teacher to help with lessons in a course book that may not be achieved without. These materials are more designated for a particular grade level and can cater to any classroom setting. Such created material can be puzzles, crosswords, role-play, flash cards, gap-fill and picture stories. A course book is a very important aspect to the class and will be followed for the entire duration of the course. With a tidy and organized syllabus and plenty of chapters to cover, the course book will be the compass for the class to follow. Overall, course books and games are an essential part of learning and can be fun with enough ingenuity and involvement with the lessons at hand.
