Reading and listening skills are two of the four basic skills in any language, the other two being speaking and writing. They are divided into two categories which are the receptive and the productive skills with reading and listening being the two receptive skills and reading and listening being the two productive skills.
Teachers can be aware of and make use of the receptive skills to engage, motivate and create interest in their learners. Especially useful in the Engage stage of the lesson teachers can pick a topic that particularly interests their students. Teachers that can pick various topics over time that interests different students in their group will find that each student can be catered for and involved in the lessons.
