In this unit, we focused on how students learn and the best ways to teach them. The unit began with learning and development theories. It explained the Maturation theory, the Environmental theory, the Constructivism theory, and highlighted the Cognitive Development theory. After reviewing these theories and their memorable attributes, it used them in context of learning a language. The unit then proceeded to native language and second language acquisition. It talked about the ways in which L1 is acquired. It also talked about Singleton's Language Acquisition and the different aspects of learning L1 vs L2. Then the unit put everything into real-life groups and talked about different approaches and methods. Using two different groups, we learned about ESA, Boomerang, and Patchwork methods. We then learned about learning environment and the teacher's role and how the classroom affects the atmosphere. Lastly, we learned about maturation and the psycholinguistic development process.
