Course Review and analysisInternational TEFL Teacher Training (ITTT) is an online english course. The course consists of twenty units. Each unit is focused on a different topic. The course aims to provide a good knowledge of the english grammatical and phonology systems as well as an awareness of the skills and techniques required for successful language training. After completing the twenty units, I would like to make a review of each unit since I believe that it is a great opportunity for me to study this course.
The course begins with an introductory unit which helps a lot for a beginner to understand the main idea of the whole course, how to take more advantage of it, the course content, the common terminology, recommended resources& reading and common questions that you may have in your mind. I think introductory unit is really helpful since it provides the answers of the questions that you wonder before beginning the course. In this sense, it is obvious that it is a great chance to start with an introductory unit which enlightens our long way. The first unit is called Teachers and Learners. In this unit, the qualities, roles and responsibilities of both teachers and students in the classroom are examined. The characteristics of a good teacher and a good learner are taught. For example: A good teacher should love teaching and be lively and entertaining. On the other hand, a good learner should have desire to learn and willingness to listen, etc. During the lessons, a teacher will have some roles such as : manager& controller, participant, model, etc. The most important thing is that the teacher should be able to switch these roles when it is required. There are numbers of factors that should be considered for learners of english such as age, language level, motivation, etc. Language levels should be taken into consideration such as beginner, intermediate, advanced, etc. In nutshell, the most important thing is to have a good relationship between the teacher and the learners so that the result of learning will be better. The second unit is called Introduction to Grammar, parts of Speech. In this unit, sentence structure and classifying the parts of the speech is examined such as nouns and types of nouns, adjectives ,comparative and superlative form of adjectives, adverbs, the rule of making an adverb, prepositions and conjunctions, verbs, pronouns, gerunds and articles. This unit is so vital since it gives the very basic and fundamental information about the sentence and the parts of the sentence that a teacher should know how to teach. The types of different parts of the sentence are also important such as common, proper, compound, singular, plural nouns, the rules of making singular nouns to plural nouns, the basic rule of an adjective clause, regular verbs, irregular verbs, etc. I think these basic grammar rules should be known very well by every teacher so that learners learn the basic but the most fundamental rules. The third unit is called EFL methodology, mistakes and feedback. In this unit, methodologies in EFL teaching such as grammar-translation, suggestopaedia , etc; straight arrow lesson plans and boomerang lesson plans, patchwork ESA lessons plans are examined. Different example activities are shown for each phase. Correction techniques are another subject which is taught in this unit. I should admit that I don’t know this valuable information so this unit is one of the most useful one for me .I learned to make different lesson plans, correction techniques and methodologies of EFL teaching which I have no idea before. In this sense, this unit is one of my favorite which I took more advantage compared to the others. The fourth unit is called english Grammar, The Tense System present Tenses. In this unit, present simple, present continuous, present perfect, present perfect continuous, their usage, grammar form and sample teaching ideas are examined. I like the format of the unit since it is examined briefly and concisely. Examining the present tenses all together is also another brilliant idea since it makes easier to comprehend. I find grammar subjects easier since I am good at them so I enjoyed the unit. The fifth unit is called Classroom Management. In this unit, what a teacher should do for managing the class, the use of gestures, voice, eye contact, grouping students, pros and cons of different groupings, classroom arrangement, teacher’s position in the class, student talking time, teacher talking time, giving instructions, establishing rapport, maintaining discipline and how to deal with problem behaviors are examined. I find this unit is also very useful since I learned a lot of new things that each teacher should know for a better teaching. Knowing the pros and cons of different arrangements in the classroom, how to maintain discipline or how to deal with a problem behavior is critical to know for each teacher. It is a great opportunity to know so that the teacher will do each movement consciously with knowing its results. The sixth unit is called The Tense system Past Tenses. In this unit, past simple, past continuous, past perfect, past perfect continuous, their usage, grammar forms, sample teaching ideas are examined. Learning all past tenses together is a good idea and easy to learn. It is an easy unit but one of the most challenging ones for most of the learners since they mix all the past tenses. In this sense, it is important to teach the differences between the usage and the grammar forms of each tense. The seventh unit is called Teaching new language, vocabulary, grammar and functions. In this unit, teaching vocabulary, techniques for vocabulary teaching, introducing grammatical structures, teaching language functions, ideas for each stage are examined. This unit also helped me to understand better of the lesson plans, teaching vocabulary, different ideas for each teaching phase. Via worksheets, I did practice of lesson plans and felt more confident that I can make my own lesson plan and put it into practice. The eighth unit is called english Grammar Future Tenses. In this unit, the future simple, future continuous, future perfect, future perfect continuous, be going to + infinitive, the present simple and present continuous for future meaning, their usage, grammar form and sample teaching ideas are examined. Examining all future tenses together is better to understand the differences between usage and grammar forms. It is also a great benefit to learn the future applications of simple present and present continuous. Even though it looks like an easy subject; so many leaners find it difficult since they easily mix them all. In this sense, it is a great idea to divide the tenses into three subjects as present, past and future. The ninth unit is called Lesson planning. In this unit, the importance of lesson planning, advantages of it, a sample lesson plan and two different lessons are examined. This unit taught me to do the lesson plan of a given material so that I did something different than usual. This helped me to believe in myself more since I saw that I can do it too. Learning distinct ways of lesson planning will help me a lot so I am so glad with the benefit that I earned during each unit. Unit 10 is called Lessons in Practice. In this unit, there are two different version of the same lesson by the same teacher. The main point is to find the differences between them to make a comparison and contrast. To examine the lessons helped me a lot to gain a different view from the students’ point of view. In this sense, as a teacher you understand which lesson plan works better and why. Unit eleventh is called Teaching Receptive skills: Reading and Listening. In this unit, reasons for reading and listening, how to read and listen, problems with listening and reading, outline of a typical receptive skills lesson are examined. Examining reading and listening together is an effective method. I also enjoyed the task about the given article which I believe is very useful and I also will use it during the class. Unit twelfth is called teaching productive skills: speaking and writing. In this unit, difference between accuracy and fluency activities, speaking activities in the classroom, techniques to encourage students to speak, writing skills, games in the classroom are examined. I love this unit especially the games in the classroom since it is the best way to motivate the students. Both teaching and learning should be fun that both teachers and students enjoy themselves whilst learning. This unit sets a great example of it. Unit thirteenth is called Teaching pronunciation and phonology. In this unit, intonation, techniques for indicating and teaching intonation, stress, lack of stress, techniques for indicating and teaching stress, sound joining, linked speech, phonemic alphabet& symbols, articulation are examined. I found this unit the most difficult one since I don’t like phonology but this unit helped me to understand better the importance of it in teaching TEFL so I will study from other resources to be better in this subject. Unit fourteenth is called course books and lesson materials. In this unit, authentic materials, created materials, published materials, analyzing course books are examined. I enjoyed the samples of created materials and learnt the difference between created materials and authentic materials, advantages and disadvantages of using a course book. Using my own authentic reading for a lesson plan was also fun to discover something new for me. Unit fifteenth is called Evaluation and Testing. In this unit, ways to assess student’s level: tutorials, evaluation by the students, tests, types of different tests such as placement tests, etc , external examinations such as TOEFL , etc are examined. This unit helped me to learn the need to evaluate students’ english and different types of testing and evaluation tools, reasons for studying for external tests. In this sense, I can admit that it enabled me to gain another perspective for a same subject. Unit sixteenth is called Conditionals and Reported Speech. In this unit, types of conditionals, teaching ideas for them, reported speech, and its rules are examined. Even though many learners find this subject difficult, I think it is an easy subject as long as you know the rules. The main problem is teaching the reported speech for some language learners can be challenging because of their native tongue. Teaching all the rules one by one with many examples will help to the students to comprehend it better. Unit seventeenth is called Equipment and Teaching Aids. In this unit, many different teaching aids, their advantages and disadvantages are examined. I love this unit since I learnt a lot of new information especially about the different teaching aids and equipment. Some of them are difficult to access due to the lack of facility in some schools so it is better to take advantage of the other practical aids. Unit eighteenth is called Modal auxiliary verbs, passive voice, relative clauses and phrasal verbs. In this unit, different auxiliary verbs, teaching ideas for them, passive voice, usage and teaching ideas, relative clause, and phrasal verbs are examined. A lot of difficult subjects are united in one subject can be challenging. I prefer this unit to be divided and examined in more details. This is the only criticism that I can make about the course. Unit nineteenth is called Teaching Special Groups. In this unit, teaching beginners, teaching individual students, suitable activities for individual students, teaching children, business english, and the monolingual and multilingual class are examined. Teaching english for specific purposes such as business english is a really useful topic in this unit. Many teachers reject to give a course since they don’t feel confident enough to give a course and they don’t know what to do. In this sense, need analysis form works well. Learning the difference between monolingual and multilingual classes can give the teacher an idea about what she& he is going to face. The last unit is called Troubleshooting. In this unit, the most common problems that a teacher can face, how to deal with them are examined. I like the ideas that are given to solve the problems since sometimes teacher don’t know what to do. Having different alternatives for different situations can be helpful for the teachers.
Finally, I can say that studying this course helped me a lot in different ways. Not only did I learn a lot of new information but also I intensified what I have already known.
