This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
I have learned quite a lot from this course. I feel that I have gained an insight on how to be a good teacher. For one, I need to be flexible and be able to morph into different roles in order to suit different class scenarios. I understand and acknowledge that each student have their own learning styles – I should be patient and tailor the learning to individuals. Not a one-size-fits-all!
The other main thing that I have learned is NOT to ask questions that have “yes/no” answers (I’m notorious in asking “do you understand?”).
I’ve also had a great insight on grammar rules. Though I knew how to use the tenses correctly (most of the time??), I absolutely had no idea about the rules or the name of the different forms until I embarked on this course.
I have recently established a centre for Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry tutoring to secondary students. Though this course is for teaching english, I find that there are many topics from the course that I can use. I intend to follow a similar structure of the lesson plan in formulating my tutoring sessions. I would also use a variety of class/group activities to maintain or enhance students’ interest and motivation levels. I would be mindful of the different roles that the teacher must have in order to have a productive lesson.
