This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
I think I’ve gained quite a bit from taking this course. For one, I had to face one of my bigger fears: english grammar. I often laugh at myself because I’m an english major at school and oftentimes I know if a text is right or wrong grammatically, but knowing why was another story. Truthfully, I think I will always feel somewhat shaky on this topic but I’ll gain more comfortable as time goes on. In high school, a teacher told me once that it’s oftentimes hard to teach something you’ve never found difficulty with personally. I’m hoping that’s true. I’ll continue to study grammar and hopefully, continue to improve. Before this course, I had little knowledge of the different techniques of teaching ESL, managing classes, planning lessons, debates surrounding course books, among other things. I think exposure to that information will be beneficial as I’m sure I’ll face it personally soon.
I plan to use all I learned in the course and successfully utilize it within a classroom. I hope to teach very young children so I’ll specifically keep in mind techniques given for teaching young learners. Writing lessons plans and knowledge of the various phases is something I will absolutely practice and put into action. If I had not taken this class, I may have had to deal with many of the subjects firsthand without having prior knowledge. Merely being exposed and aware to the issues I may come across will increase my chances of handling those issues with greater success.
