This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
I have personally (re)learned a lot from this course. I have learned many of the simple grammatical and phonetic rules in the english language - why and how certain words are pronounced the way they are and some "tricks" to help students remember those certain rules. I have learned the different tenses and when/how to appropriately use them. I have learned the importance of establishing good rapport with your class - I need them to trust me so they will want to learn and I can guide them. I will demonstrate the qualities of patience and understanding, while reinforcing the rules and processes associated with the english language. Frustration with students does not help them learn - it will just dissuade them from wanting to learn further. I will set goals for the class and encourage students to set their own goals. Incentives will be given (small prizes, seat movement, homework pass, etc) as well as disciplinary action where/if need be. I learned that you can create a fun atmosphere in learning - it doesn't have to be boring. The more they enjoy the process of learning, the more they will learn!
