I’ve gained much more from this course than I expected. I don’t think that native english speakers are really taught much english grammar in school and most of my grammar knowledge came from my french, German and italian lessons. This course has taught me that there is so much more to teaching a language than just being able to speak it.
As I live in france, near to the business centre of Geneva, my plan is hopefully to teach english to company employees. These groups are likely to be multilingual as there are many multinational companies based here. There are a number of businesses in the valley where I live that supply language tutors to both local companies and larger businesses in the city. I know that there is a shortage of qualified tutors in our area so hopefully I will be able to work for one of them. There would also be a possibility of getting work at the international school’s summer school. The students there are mostly the children of ex-pats and are many different nationalities. The school is very keen that they all learn english.
Having said all of that. I would one day like to volunteer to teach english in a school in Cambodia, even if it’s just for a year. When I spent time there it seemed that there was a dreadful shortage of native english speakers teaching there because the schools don’t have the money to pay them. I met a cambodian who was teaching english and I could barely understand a word he said so I fear for the next generation of english students.
