The School

Our TEFL training center in Cape Town is located in one of the city’s major shopping malls and is part of a closed off and paved area that runs through the city offering pedestrians the chance to experience the sights, sounds and aromas of colorful shopping vendors and local eateries as they stroll around the mall.

The center has excellent facilities for course participants to take advantage of during their time with us. Trainees will feel right at home at the school and as the classes are usually quite small, trainers are able to provide plenty of individual attention.

The course is ideal for those looking to take an intensive TEFL course in a fantastic location. Our TEFL trainers have the skills and experience necessary to ensure you graduate with confidence in your ability to teach English successfully and whether you are an experienced teacher or a complete beginner, you are bound to get something out of this course.

Accommodation

We have various types of accommodation available to course participants one of which is a stay in the home of a local family. This is the ideal option for those looking to get the most out their time in Cape Town and to get the true Capetonian experience. Trainees will be treated as part of the family in a warm, friendly environment with meals and laundry provided as well as internet access.

Another option is a backpackers’ lodge just a few minutes from the training center and if you are interested in finding private accommodation, we are able to help you.

Accomodation Fees

The accommodation fees are not part of the course price and you are free to choose whichever accommodation option you prefer.

You are not obliged to use the accommodation provided by the school and you are welcome to make your own accommodation arrangements. If you choose to use our accommodation, it should be paid for either by cash, PayPal or bank transfer directly to the school at the start of the course.

• What does the tuition for the program include?

  The TEFL course fees include all course materials and certification services. Airfares, accommodation and food are not included.

  *Outstanding fees must be received in full 10 days prior to the course start date.

  Refunds and cancellation fees:

  • A full refund, less 20% for administration fee, will apply for 7 days prior to the course.

  • No refund will be given once the course has started.

• What is an average program day like?

  Classes start at 9 o’clock in the morning and end at 3 o’clock in the afternoon. You will have a 15 minutes break and 30 minutes for lunch. During the first two weeks we will focus on teaching methodologies, grammar, vocabulary, classroom management, error correction and feedback techniques.

  The final two weeks have a more practical focus in order to prepare trainees for the assessed lessons. This period also covers lesson planning, pronunciation, phonology, researching different teaching resources and making appropriate use of technology in the classroom.

• How many students are on average in the program?

  Class sizes range from four to six trainees. Most trainees are from South Africa, however, we do welcome non-native speakers who are fluent in English.

• What are the teaching practice students and classes like?

  Our students come from all around the world including; Saudi Arabia, Brazil, France, Italy and many more. As the teaching practice classes are free for students, they are there because they want to be and are eager to study.

  The TEFL trainer guides trainees through the teaching practice section of the course, giving them the skills and knowledge needed to teach students from all walks of life.

• What is the program accommodation like? Where is it located?

  Accommodation options are minutes away from the school. Options include stays with host families and backpacker lodges. Backpacker lodges are self-catering, whereas the host families provide meals, Wi-Fi and laundry.

• Can I have things shipped or mailed to the school?

  This is not possible. We advise students to have their packages delivered to their accommodation.

• What is the TEFL job market in Cape Town like?

  Although the number of English schools has grown over the last few years, the job market is moderate in Cape Town and the salaries are quite low. Most teachers find jobs overseas once they have completed the course with us. While you are going through the process of finding a job, you can do volunteer teaching to gain valuable experience. Some people do get lucky when applying for jobs in Cape Town, so it’s always worth trying.

• When do I start looking for work in Cape Town? Where do I start?

  We recommend that you start sending out resumes and researching the job market during the last week of the course, although it is best to take your time and get as much information as possible to give you a clear idea of what is available.

• What is the average salary like?

  English teacher salaries in Cape Town range from R8000 - R12000 per month, however, this depends on the type of school or company you end up working for.

• Do most schools provide accommodation for their teachers?

  Not many people find work in Cape Town itself. Most people take their course in Cape Town and then travel abroad to find teaching work. Although there is a huge success rate for many teachers when applying for jobs overseas.

• Do schools provide health insurance?

• Do schools provide work permits?

  They do not provide work permits but they can help you extend your visa/permit.

• How do I get to Cape Town?

  Cape Town International airport is 30 minutes away from the school. You can take a metered taxi from the airport or we can arrange an airport transfer to take you from the airport to your accommodation.

• What documents do I bring?

  You should bring your passport, visa, resume and driving license. Additionally, if you are planning on working in Cape Town, you should bring original copies of any college degrees or certificates with you.

• What’s the climate like? What kind of clothing do I need to bring?

  Winter in Cape Town is generally wet and cool and summer is dry and warm, although the weather can be unpredictable.

  If you’re intending to come to Cape Town during winter, you should pack your warmest clothes and comfortable shoes, but temperatures do not drop below 10°c.

  Summer in Cape Town is a pleasant experience. The average temperature is about 24°c and 14°c at night.
